The Swimming Swan is excited to begin hiring for the upcoming Spring and Summer 2023 Season. We’re hiring for all positions at the Palo Alto Elks Lodge in Palo Alto, CA.



*50% reimbursement of certification costs upon hire and after completion of a full season or 90 days of employment.

Now Hiring in Palo Alto, CA!


Offering full time, seasonal positions at the Palo Alto Elks Lodge community pool. The 2023 season runs from Memorial Day (05/29) to Labor Day (09/04).

Shifts are available 7 days a week between 7:30 AM and 7:30 PM, including holidays.



  • $300 bonus for any new applicants that get hired to work and finish out the summer season with The Swimming Swan
  • Referral bonuses of up to $150 once the referral fulfills 90 days of work

Open Positions


Dual Lifeguard + Swim Instructor position unless otherwise decided.

  • Up to 30-40 per week


  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Strong swimming experience preferred.
  • Current and valid ARC or equivalent certification including but not limited to Lifeguard, CPR First  Aid, and AED preferred.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment verbal skills, swim, and in-water skills tests.
  • Strong customer service background preferred.

Pay Rates: $21 – $22 hourly

30-40 hours per week



Pay: $23+ hourly based on certifications and experience

30-40 hours weekly


  • Ages 18+ with a High school Diploma or equivalent
  • 2+ years of lifeguard and/or swim instructor experience required
  • Current ARC or equivalent Lifeguard certification required
  • Current Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification preferred
  • Current (or ability to obtain) an ARC Lifeguard Management training and Lifeguard Instructor certification within 30 days of hire
  • 1+ year experience in a leadership role preferred
  • Ability to pass pre-employment verbal, swim, and in-water skills tests
  • All applicants are subject to background screenings and (when applicable) drug testing

Hours & Pay

  • $25+ hourly based on experience and certifications
  • 30-40 hours weekly

  • Flexible schedule required


  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age with a High school Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current and valid ARC or equivalent certification including but not limited to: Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, AED.
  • Strong customer service background.
  • Current LGIT Lifeguard Instructor Trainer Certification preferred
  • 3+ year(s) lifeguard experience required
  • 1+ years lifeguard experience in a leadership role required
  • Ability to enrolled in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Manager Certification Course within 30 days of Hire.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment verbal, swim, and in-water skills tests

Work directly with the Pool Manager and staff to aid in the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and administration of the pool and surrounding facility, such as:

  • Implementing employee schedules, assignments, and rotations
  • Assist with the training, supervising, and evaluating lifeguards/swim instructors.
  • Completing daily opening and closing duties
  • Managing employee conflicts and call-outs
  • Handle routine disciplinary issues and communicate with the Pool Manager and other supervisors when necessary
  • Act as the initial point-of-contact for patron questions and concerns.
  • Monitor activities, provide instructions and prevent accidents in the aquatics facility
  • Respond to all emergency situations around the aquatics facility immediately and appropriately. This includes, but is not limited to performing Lifeguarding skills, First Aid, CPR, and others until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Supervise the Head Lifeguards and their corresponding duties.
  • Record and organize accurate records concerning attendance, accident/incident/injury reports, chlorine readings, and schedules
  • Reviewing daily pool inspection sheets
  • Assume full management responsibilities of the aquatics facility in the absence of the Pool Manager.
