To become a lifeguard, do I need to be a perfect swimmer? No, you must however be able to swim 300 yards continuously either front crawl or breaststroke, tread water in the deep end for 2 minutes, retrieve a 10 lb. weight from the deep end and swim 20 yards with the weight, and exit the pool without the use of a ladder or steps within 1 minute and 40 seconds. The brick portion of the swimming test is generally the most difficult so practicing prior to the start of your class is strongly recommended.
What if I cannot pass the swim test? Unfortunately, if you cannot pass the test, you are unable to continue to participate in the class. You can however complete a transfer request form and pay the $50 fee to schedule a future class.
