Water Safety Instructor Certification (WSI)

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification is to train Instructor candidates to teach all of the courses presented in the Swimming and Water Safety Program to all age groups; from Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim Levels 1 to 6 and Adult Swim. This certification is the gold standard for all Swimming Instructors.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) CERTIFICATION: valid for 2 years.



  1. Participants must be at least 16 years of age on the first day of class.
  2. Complete Red Cross 8 Hours Online Learning; must print out and bring to first day of class. $35 payable to the Red Cross, this fee is in addition to your certification course fee.
  3. Pass Swim Test on first day of class:
    1. Proficiently swim 25 yards in all 6 Strokes
      1. Primary Strokes include: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly
      2. Secondary Strokes include: Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke
      3. No time limit
    2. Tread water for 1 minute only using your legs. Face must stay above the water during this exercise.
    3. Back float for 1 minute in deep water.



  1. 2-Day Blended Learning Class. Hours are from 8 AM – 6:00 PM
  2. 4-Day Blended Learning Class. Hours are from 4 PM – 9 PM



  1. Proof of age
  2. Proof of online course completion – screen shot or print a copy
  3. Download Lifeguard Course Manual and Print Training Forms ????? 
  4. Bathing suit – no bikini’s permitted
  5. Towel, sunblock, snacks and lunch, paper, pen/pencil


WSI Certifications will also teach you: 

  1. Water Safety in and around all bodies of water
  2. Hydrodynamics
  3. Basic safety, survival and swimming skills to help children gain water competency
  4. Helping people with disabilities enjoy the water
  5. Higher level swimming skills that help people of all ages
  6. Stroke mechanics for competitive strokes including starts, turns and head-first entries
  7. Fundamentals of diving from a diving board


Digital Certificates: 

  1. Copies of your certificate are available within 72 hours of a successful completion of a certification course.
